FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. What is a general strike?
A general strike is when working people refuse their labor until their demands are met. Research shows we need 3.5% of the population to be successful.

2. Do I have to sign a strike card?
No, signing a strike card is not required to participate in our movement, or the strike itself. But it is important because it lets us know how many people are committed to striking.

3. What is your chapter doing?
General Strike Los Angeles is working with General Strike US (GSUS) to organize a national general strike by getting 3.5% of the U.S. population (11 million) to sign their strike cards. However, we are also looking into the possibility of a general strike in the LA area only. We believe that due to recent actions by ICE, the national guard, and other local events, there may be enough momentum for LA to strike on its own. The population of LA county is 9.76 million, so 3.5% of that is 341,600 strike card signatures. But even if LA doesn't reach that number, a local strike may still be possible.

To let us know you're interested in a local strike, sign up for our email list.

4. When are meetings?
Virtual chapter meetings are the first Thursday of the month from 6:00 - 7:00 pm PST on Jitsi. You don't need an account to join the meeting; simply type your name (or an alias) and click, "join." The meeting link is here: https://meet.jit.si/gsuslosangeles.

If you are brand new to GSUS, please attend a national Welcome Teach-In. They are every other Sunday at 5:30 pm PST.

5. When is the strike?
The local strike happens when we hit 341,600 strike card signatures from within LA County (that's why we need your zip code), or when we feel we have enough partnerships with local non-profits, unions, and other organizations to be effective.

The national strike happens when we hit 11 million strike card signatures nationally.

6. What are your demands?
There are two sets of demands; local and national. You can help craft our demands by joining our chapter and attending a meeting. Our demands would likely be submitted to the LA City Council, the Mayor of LA, and the LA County Board of Supervisors, among others.

7. How can I get more involved?
The best ways to get involved are to A.) sign up for our email list, B.) join our discord, C.) follow us on socials, and D.) attend a chapter meeting.

8. Do you have a list of resources to help me survive a strike?
Yes we do! Check out our Local Strike Resources page for a list of free and low-cost essential services including food, clothing, healthcare, and housing.

9. Who is working with you?
We have a growing list of local partner organizations who are committed to striking with us, including Unión del Barrio, Boycott Home Depot, Strike For Our Rights, and General Strike San Diego.

10. Do you have a calendar of events?
Sure do! We have a national calendar with all GSUS events listed in one place.
